Emerald Necklace Walk and Tour
Lace up your walking shoes and join us for our third annual Conservancy-led walk through Frederick Law Olmsted’s masterpiece!
Led by Conservancy President, Karen Mauney-Brodek, you will enjoy a seven-mile walk from the Back Bay Fens to Franklin Park. Brief stops along the way will allow participants to learn from several of the Conservancy’s Park Overseer Organizations who will share recent park improvements and the many exciting things to come for the Emerald Necklace.
Starting at the Shattuck Visitor Center, the walk will traverse the Back Bay Fens to Charlesgate and continue along to the restored Muddy River, where the brand new Justine Mee Liff Park takes center stage overlooking the recently day-lighted river. From there, walkers will stroll the banks of the river along the Riverway, glimpsing, perhaps, the turtles and herons that frequently visit the area. Iconic structures loom large in this park—the picturesque Round House, the bridle path and granite bridges.
Next is Olmsted Park, featuring scenic waterways and ponds, followed by Jamaica Pond, where we’ll stop for a lunch break at Pinebank Promontory before heading to the Arnold Arboretum for some floral sights and scents.
The walk will conclude in Franklin Park, which Olmsted himself considered to be one of his greatest achievements. Participants will enjoy vistas that transport the viewer back in time—Schoolmaster Hill, the 99 Steps and Ellicott Arch, to name a few. We will end our walk on the Playstead where we will be greeted by Bamsfest, an art and music festival taking place from 12pm-8pm. Walkers are welcome to stay and enjoy the festivities!
