More Ways to Volunteer

Shattuck Visitor Center

The Shattuck Visitor Center serves as both a welcoming gateway to the Emerald Necklace parks and office of the Emerald Necklace Conservancy. If you’re looking for things to do in Boston, we offer a variety of opportunities for volunteers – from docent training to office support and communications, research and event planning.

Emerald Necklace Ambassador

Volunteer to be an Emerald Necklace Ambassador and share your enthusiasm for the parks with others. Park Ambassadors greet visitors at the Shattuck Visitor Center in the Back Bay Fens, set up the information table at Summer on the Emerald Necklace and represent the Conservancy at fairs and festivals hosted by other organizations.

Become an Ambassador and/or Volunteer Leader!

We will be running an Ambassador Training at the Shattuck Visitor Center on Thursday, April 17 at 6:00pm. We will have a short presentation, schedule a docent-led tour, and ask you to sign up for at least one event at which you will table for the Conservancy. Register here!

If you’d also like to lead volunteer groups in the park, stay an extra hour (until 8:00pm) to learn basic forestry principles, volunteer management, and invasive plant identification and removal. Leaders must commit to assisting at three woodland events per year. Register here!

Emerald Necklace Docent Program

Docents are volunteers trained to lead interpretive walking tours of the Back Bay Fens, Riverway, Olmsted Park and Jamaica Pond for the general public and special interest groups. Docents also may assist with visitor programming and lead or host activities at the Shattuck Visitor Center or on site in the Emerald Necklace parks. Tours and activities are generally 90 minutes in length.
