Remembering Simone Auster
It is with deep regret that we convey the passing of Simone Auster, the Emerald Necklace Conservancy’s first Executive Director, on June 15, 2019.
Simone was instrumental in establishing the Conservancy as a powerful voice advocating on behalf of the Emerald Necklace and the restoration of the Muddy River. Her eight-year tenure (1998-2007) saw the establishment of many of the key programs and projects we have today. These include the Justine Mee Liff Fund and the annual Party in the Park, our largest fundraiser and one of the most anticipated social events of the year; partnering with the Boston Parks Department to launch restoration efforts for the Kelleher Rose Garden and piloting our volunteer program; and overseeing the creation of a coalition—the Park Overseers—for the Emerald Necklace.
Many park advocates have had the privilege of knowing and working with Simone. We can take comfort in knowing that, through her work, she lives on every time someone enters the Emerald Necklace- seeking, in the words of Frederick Law Olmsted, “a ground to which people may easily go when the day’s work is done.”
May she rest in peace.
