SUMMARY:Franklin Park Kite & Bike Festival
DESCRIPTION:In 1969\, the first Franklin Park Kite Festival was held\, and became an annual tradition for decades to come. In 2010\, the Franklin Park Coalition brought back the event\, reimagined as the Kite & Bike Festival. Held every year on the Saturday after Mother’s Day\, the festival brings out more than 1\,000 people to fly kites\, ride bikes\, learn to ride a bike\, and picnic. With food trucks\, kids’ bikes to “rent” for free\, affordable kites for sale\, bike mechanics on site\, and the beautiful scenery of Franklin Park\, this event is not to be missed! \nOne neighborhood resident describes the Kite & Bike Festival as “my favorite day ever in the twenty years I’ve lived in Boston!” \nBoston Bikes brings kids’ bicycles for children to “rent” for free\, and Bikes Not Bombs has bike mechanics on site. \nCome celebrate our own “opening day” in Franklin Park at the Kite & Bike Festival on Saturday\, May 19\, 2018 from 11:00am to 4:00pm.

SUMMARY:Forest Bathing
DESCRIPTION:Experience the healing benefits of The Emerald Necklace on a Forest Bathing Walk. Discover one of Boston’s forested gems on this slow-paced guided therapeutic combination of leisurely walking\, sitting\, and observation.  This is a chance to unplug\, slow down\, and de-stress through a series of gentle sensory-opening invitations that welcome us to deepen our connection with nature. Forest Bathing is inspired by Shinrin-Yoku\, a term coined in Japan in the 1980’s and there has been years worth of research and studies done demonstrating how the practice is an effective form of preventative healthcare and treatment for many stress-related illnesses.  There is a long list of proven health benefits from increased cerebral blood flow to stronger immune defenses.\n\nTam Willey of Toadstool Walks is a Certified Forest Therapy Guide who believes the practice of Forest Therapy can deepen and broaden our relationships and guides Forest Bathing Walks for all.\n\nTo register\, email Kent Jackson at kjackson@emeraldnecklace.org by Tuesday\, June 5th.

SUMMARY:Friends of Fairstead: Spring 2018 Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Join Friends of Fairstead for their Spring 2018 Lecture: What is a Park For? Olmsted\, Obama\, and the Meaning of Urban Language\, featuring Carlo Rotella\, Director of the American Studies Program at Boston College. Register here. \nIn 2017 Barack Obama announced that he would build his presidential library in Chicago’s Jackson Park\, one of most important big-city parks designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. Despite widespread admiration for the Obamas and hopes that the library will give the area a much-needed economic boost\, this plan has raised concerns about drastically transforming such a vital piece of the nation’s system of urban public green spaces. The resulting debate takes up fundamental questions about the meaning of urban landscape: How do we balance a park’s various purposes? What is the relationship between the park and the surrounding neighborhoods? What—and who—is a park for? Finding answers requires digging not only into the archives that hold records of the South Side’s spatial and social histories but also into the imaginations of South Siders whose identities have been shaped by the enormous green fact of Jackson Park. \n6:00pm Reception\, 7:00pm Lecture.
