SUMMARY:Hello Muddy! Guided Tour of the Restored Muddy River
DESCRIPTION:Led by an Emerald Necklace Conservancy docent\, this tour will traverse the footprint of the restored Muddy River in the Back Bay Fens. You’ll learn about the project that brought portions of the Muddy River above ground and hear the remarkable story of how a piece of Olmsted’s landscape was reclaimed as parkland after spending decades paved over and used as a parking lot. The tour will begin and end at the entrance to REI at the Landmark Center. This tour is free and open to the public. Wear walking shoes and bring a refillable water bottle. Tours are cancelled for rain or extreme weather. Check our website for updates or call 617-522-2700.

SUMMARY:Lilac Sunday
DESCRIPTION:Of the thousands of flowering plants in the Arboretum\, only one\, the lilac\, is singled out each year for a daylong celebration. Mainly located on the edge of Bussey Hill Road in the heart of the landscape\, the lilac collection at the Arnold Arboretum is among the premier collections of these plants in North America. Lilac Sunday has been celebrated at the Arnold Arboretum since 1908. \nTours of the lilacs and family activities are available from 10:00am to 3:00pm on Sunday\, May 13. Picnicking is permitted on this day only\, but food must be brought in to the Arboretum—no food vendors on site. The landscape is open from dawn until dusk.

SUMMARY:Friends of Fairstead: Spring 2018 Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Join Friends of Fairstead for their Spring 2018 Lecture: What is a Park For? Olmsted\, Obama\, and the Meaning of Urban Language\, featuring Carlo Rotella\, Director of the American Studies Program at Boston College. Register here. \nIn 2017 Barack Obama announced that he would build his presidential library in Chicago’s Jackson Park\, one of most important big-city parks designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. Despite widespread admiration for the Obamas and hopes that the library will give the area a much-needed economic boost\, this plan has raised concerns about drastically transforming such a vital piece of the nation’s system of urban public green spaces. The resulting debate takes up fundamental questions about the meaning of urban landscape: How do we balance a park’s various purposes? What is the relationship between the park and the surrounding neighborhoods? What—and who—is a park for? Finding answers requires digging not only into the archives that hold records of the South Side’s spatial and social histories but also into the imaginations of South Siders whose identities have been shaped by the enormous green fact of Jackson Park. \n6:00pm Reception\, 7:00pm Lecture.
