This year’s Emerald Evening will take place virtually – An Emerald Evening In. Guests will be treated to a networking cocktail reception and an exciting program highlighting the work of the Emerald Necklace Conservancy and the vital role parks play in our lives – as green infrastructure\, vibrant public spaces and essential elements of healthy living. We will recognize City of Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh with the Olmsted Award of Excellence for his administration’s significant capital investments in the Emerald Necklace and invite participants to delve into park topics such as caring for an urban tree canopy\, green infrastructure and spatial justice. The evening will also feature a raffle\, trivia questions\, a special musical performance and a custom meal curated by local businesses Curd & Co. and The Urban Grape. \n  \n Visit the event page for more information

DESCRIPTION:The Emerald Necklace Conservancy is proud to partner with the Massachusetts Historical Society and the Muddy Water Initiative for a conversation on social equity\, environmental justice\, and the Muddy River. \nThe chain of green spaces and waterways that comprise the Emerald Necklace park system is an invaluable urban oasis. Described as “the lungs of the city” this parkland and its rivers and ponds clean the city air\, provide habitats for birds and other wildlife\, and greatly improve quality of life for Boston residents. Our panel will explore the past\, present\, and future of this urban wild\, beginning with Olmsted’s vision\, through the lens of social equity and environmental justice. \nPlease note\, this is an online event held on the video conference platform\, Zoom. The goal is to begin a conversation on how our parks can better serve Black and Brown communities\, particularly during public health crises like COVID-19. \nJoining our webinar are distinguished guests:  \nCatherine T. Morris is the founder and executive director of Boston Art & Music Soul (BAMS) Festival. Held in our own Franklin Park\, BAMS Fest empowers marginalized communities and artists of color throughout Greater Boston. Since its debut in the summer of 2018\, BAMS Fest has provided equitable access and opportunity for marginalized audiences and artists of color to experience high-quality live arts and music programming in Boston with over 8\,500 attendees.  \nSara Jensen Carr is a professor of architecture at Northeastern University. Sara teaches and researches primarily the connections between landscape\, human health\, urban ecology\, and design.  Her current book in progress\, The Topography of Wellness: Health and the American Urban Landscape\, examines landscape responses to six historical urban epidemics and the implication for current and future practice. \nThis webinar will be hosted on Zoom.
