SUMMARY:Gong Soundscape
DESCRIPTION:Playing gong\, singing bowls\, and bells\, Nancy Aleo will create a gong soundscape responding to the shifting wind\, the flowing fog\, the hissing sculpture\, voices\, and the natural sounds of the place. Meditative and otherworldly at times\, each of the five performances will be unique. Respectfully honoring Fujiko Nakaya’s visionary work\, the sounds will expand and drift around the space\, then fade similar to the fog moving and dissipating over the landscape. \n\nThis program is made possible with generous support from Barbara and Amos Hostetter and Eugene M. Lang Foundation.

SUMMARY:Lavender Ruins
DESCRIPTION:Please note: Lavender Ruins may not play if Fog x Ruins is offline. Click here to check on the status of Fog x Ruins and other fog sculptures. \nAn evening concert sound installation by Neil Leonard made in response to Fog x Ruins\, Fujiko Nakaya’s site-specific fog sculpture for Franklin Park’s Overlook Shelter Ruins\, the site where Elma Lewis invited Duke Ellington to perform annually for Playhouse in the Park. \nLeonard’s composition fills the site of Nakaya’s dancing fog and lighting design by Shiro Takatani\, with sound that also pays tribute to the visionary concepts of Fujiko Nakaya and the sonic imagination of Duke Ellington. The work revisits selected themes by Ellington including Lady of the Lavender Mist\, The Kissing Mist\, Atmosphere (Moon Mist)\, A Blue Fog That You Can Almost See Through (Transblucency)\, The Fog That Clouds It (Schwiphti). As these titles suggest\, the music is atmospheric\, lush and mist-like. The sound is reminiscent of Duke Ellington’s Boston-area born saxophonists\, Harry Carney and Johnny Hodges\, who recorded these themes with Ellington\, and performed with his orchestra in the Ruins. \nThis 20-minute sound installation\, playing at 5:00pm and 6:00pm\, comprises an array of speakers located at the Overlook Shelter Ruins surrounding the fog sculpture and audience. \n\nPresentation of this program is made possible with generous support from Barbara and Amos Hostetter\, Eugene M. Lang Foundation and an anonymous donor.

SUMMARY:Borboletas nas Intestinas/Butterflies in our Stomachs
DESCRIPTION:Borboletas nas Intestinas/Butterflies in our Stomachs is a study in vulnerability\, an embodiment and visualization of the permeability of our selves. In this way\, Nakaya’s Fog sculptures are the ideal environment. This dance piece is set in the Back Bay Fens\, which\, with its many twists and turns\, open spaces and hidden spaces\, will be a rich world to explore the possibilities of this duet. \nThe performance is a collaboration between dancer/choreographers Wendy Jehlen (US) and Luciane Ramos-Silva (Brazil) with the ANIKAYA Dance Theater. The collaboration began as a series of site-responsive improvisations by Wendy and Luciane in São Paulo\, Brazil and has grown into a project exploring the layering of spaces and emotional states. Audience members are encouraged to walk in the space of the dancers during the performance. The dancers explore their environment individually and together\, coming in and out of eachothers’ space and field of vision. \nThis 40-minute piece will be performed twice\, at 4:30 and 5:30pm. \n\nThis program is made possible with generous support from Barbara and Amos Hostetter and Eugene M. Lang Foundation.

SUMMARY:Contact: A Mobile Darkroom
DESCRIPTION:A pop-up photo tent by photographer William Van Beckum\, Contact: A Mobile Darkroom aims to make memories of Fog x FLO physical. \nPhotography has been a tool used to comprehend landscapes since the earliest photographic experiments in the 19th century. Since that time\, photography has evolved to the point where photographing is ubiquitous with experiencing. Smartphones make this act accessible to the entire population\, but digital images tend to stay in digital form\, limiting their long term impact. By making smartphone images into physical darkroom prints\, visitors will be encouraged to create memories of Nakaya’s works\, as well as ponder the power of image making. \n\nThis program is made possible with generous support from Barbara and Amos Hostetter and Eugene M. Lang Foundation. \n

SUMMARY:CANCELLED: Lavender Ruins

SUMMARY:Silence | Visible
DESCRIPTION:silence | visible is a 7-minute work composed and directed by Lucy Yao for quartet with flutes and voices specifically written for Franklin Park Ruins. The piece aims to collaborate with Fog and its amorphous qualities and engage in a dialogue with nature’s fluctuating variables. Fog\, which blurs boundaries between the beginning and end\, inspired silence | visible to explore the cycles of life that are present in nature\, and a wish to relinquish control to the uncertainty of the “how”\, and “when”\, and more on events as they are\nhappening at that moment. At any given day\, nature can give shape to the fog depending on variables that are completely controlled by climate. In this live performance\, layers of sound form around the sculpture in an on-site specific work by pianist and composer Lucy Yao. \nThis project is performed as a response to Fujiko Nakaya’s Fog x FLO at the Franklin Park Ruins. Listeners are welcome to walk into the dense mass of sound and fog to experience the work. silence | visible is made possible by the Berklee Interdisciplinary Institute and the Emerald Necklace Conservancy. \nThere will be two performances of this work on October 27\, at 3:30 and 3:45 PM. \nLucy Yao is a pianist and composer who enjoys merging contemporary and classical music\, is founder of interdisciplinary collective “Strangers in a Room”\, chamber music\, and teaching. She is based in Jamaica Plain\, Massachusetts. \n\nThis program is made possible with generous support from Barbara and Amos Hostetter and Eugene M. Lang Foundation.
