SUMMARY:Historic Follies & Native Gardens Tour at Franklin Park Zoo
DESCRIPTION:Step back in time with the Franklin Park Zoo horticulturalist for an up-close look at the Zoo’s historic follies. These ornamental towers\, made from chunks of Roxbury puddingstone—the state rock of Massachusetts—have stood for nearly two centuries. Just steps from the African lion habitat\, we’ll visit Sargent’s Folly. Built around 1840\, this tower is the oldest structure in Franklin Park and the only surviving architecture that predates the park itself. \nWe’ll then walk to the Rock Garden to view the second tower\, which was modeled after Sargent’s Folly. Here you’ll learn about our five-year effort to restore the historic garden to reflect its appearance from a century ago\, including period-style plantings and a flowing water feature. You’ll also discover the vital role native plants play in building a resilient\, healthy ecosystem.

SUMMARY:Community Volunteer Day in Franklin Park
DESCRIPTION:The Boston Parks and Recreation Department’s Urban Wilds Division is inviting you to join us in removing non-native plant species and build habitat walls at our first volunteer event of the year! \n\n\nThis natural area is home to beautiful rock outcrops\, heritage trees\, and attractions like the Bear Dens. However\, it needs our help to stay healthy and remain an important park for us and future generations. We hope that by bringing people together to work towards restoring the ecological health of the Long Crouch Woods\, we can showcase this area’s beauty and potential. \n\nFor this event\, there is no experience necessary! The focus is to clean up trash and glass from the site\, clean up trails\, remove invasive understory plants\, and build habitat walls with the brush generated; all of which are done to improve overall forest health and increase visibility into the woods. There will be lots of learning opportunities for residents of all ages and backgrounds. \nThe event will happen\, rain or shine. We will cancel in the case of extreme weather such as thunderstorms. Staff will provide all the tools\, supplies\, and instruction needed for the project(s). Please dress in comfortable\, weather-appropriate clothing\, as well as wearing closed toe shoes. We recommend participants bring their own water\, snacks\, sunscreen\, and bug spray. All ages are welcome\, we just ask to note if any children will be joining for the day! \nFor the understory plant removal aspect\, expect to be utilizing hand cutting tools like loppers and pruners\, moving brush\, raking\, and maybe even kneeling/crouching. Please let us know in the form if you have any special accommodations or needs in order to joyfully participate! \nThere is limited street parking near the entrance we are meeting at\,  but it can be limited\, so we also encourage you to bike\, walk\, or take public transit. There is also public parking at the Playstead and Giraffe Gate of the zoo\, which is about a 10 minute walk to the school street entrance. \nWe hope to see you there\, and we would also love to hear your ideas for future projects! Be sure to fill out our Google Form to sign up.

SUMMARY:Explorers Garden Tour at the Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:The Explorers Garden rests in a microclimate just below the summit of Bussey Hill. This nearly five-acre site provides ideal growing conditions for many species that have been challenging to grow in less protected areas of the Arboretum. As such\, it has proven to be a perfect testing ground for plants collected in the expeditions of E. H. Wilson in the early 1900s to the NACPEC  (North America-China Plant Exploration Consortium) expeditions of our own time. Join docent Marie Herbert for a guided tour to learn more about some of the plants showcased in this special collection and to hear stories of the plant exploration expeditions that brought them to the Arboretum. \nAccessibility: This tour will include paved roads and woodchip paths. Please wear weather-appropriate clothing and closed toe walking shoes. \nAudience: This program is geared towards adults. \nWeather Policy: Tours may be canceled in cases of the following weather conditions: severe wind\, snow\, ice\, thunder or lightning events; temperatures over 90 degrees; temperatures below 20 degrees; or other weather events at the discretion of Arboretum staff. In the case of cancelation\, you will be contacted by Arboretum staff no later than 2 hours before the start of the event. If you have questions about the status of a program\, please email or call the Visitor Center at (617) 384-5209 between 10:00am and 4:00pm. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Wake Up the Earth Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Wake Up the Earth Festival was born on land that was cleared for a highway. When the communities of Jamaica Plain and Roxbury started a grassroots movement with the South-West Corridor Coalition to stop  Interstate 95 from cutting through their neighborhoods\, they reclaimed that cleared earth and turned it into a farm\, a festival\, and a tradition now 48 years strong. Every first Saturday in May\, thousands return to this space to dance\, parade\, create\, and celebrate our neighborhood’s history of activism\, expression\, and inclusion. Art is how we build and empower our community. \nThe event will take place at the following locations concurrently: 10:30AM @ Curtis Hall (Center Street Parade)\, 11:00AM @ Robert Lawsone Park (Egleston Street Parade)\, 12-6PM Southwest Corridor Park @ Stonybrook T Station.

SUMMARY:River Fit Spring 2026: Nature Therapy & Forest Bathing
DESCRIPTION:Introducing Nature Therapy & Forest Bathing with Cole Huang! \nIn this FREE class\, we’ll slow down and fully experience nature with all our senses. Nature therapy is the practice of immersing yourself in a natural setting and noticing the sights\, sounds\, textures\, and details around you. It is inspired by the Japanese concept of shinrin yoku\, meaning “forest bathing\,” which describes being surrounded by and absorbed in the atmosphere of the forest. (No\, we won’t be swimming in the Charles!). \nWe’ll engage in guided meditation and activities designed to deepen our connection with the natural world and awaken our senses. \nRegister ahead of each class to stay informed of any updates\, including weather cancellations. Don’t forget your water bottle—refill stations will be available on site! If your plans change\, please cancel your registration so others can join.
