SUMMARY:Beyond Walls: Performance in Public Space
DESCRIPTION:Rising draws inspiration from the restoration of the Muddy River to highlight our collective need to recover and regrow as a society after the Covid-19 pandemic. Rising explores the potential of renewal from the simplicity of nature through live music\, dance and poetry as performed by a multidisciplinary ensemble. Each aspect of the performance is designed to sonically\, visually\, and verbally guide the audience through the cyclical nature of growth and restoration. \nSam Feldman – Contemporary Theater 23’ | Tess Stevens – Dance 23’ | AnnaLotte Smith\, Piano Performance MM 22’ | Rachel Kempenaar – Dance | Jacob Windeler – Dance 24’ | Featuring 42 Boston Conservatory at Berklee students \nFriday\, May 28 at 12:00 PM and 12:30 PM | Two 15- minute performances | Back Bay Fens\, next to the Kelleher Rose Garden  \nRising Poems\nPOEM #1 \nBy: Alex Leondis\, Yitong Zhu\, Mel Tanaka\, Dylan Gombos\, James Paquette\, Monique Lonergan\, San Feldman \nWhat is this muck on the pulse of the community? \nWhy does this water choose to rage infinitely? \nOverflowing and drowning. I am bursting to breathe. \nThese days are all the same \nfalling from grace \nit’s all too slow a pace for me \n  \nScratching at the earth with a sneaking persistence \nRollover and rollover and rollover – I have dirt in my nails from a distance \nA quiet tornado rages and weaves \nYou should breathe what you believe\, \nReset what it means to grieve \n  \nIt giveth and it taketh away\, \nWhat are you doing here? \nWhy did you stay? \nSensing instead of seeing \nPerceiving is believing \nAnd we are all healing \nStop the flood but not the flow \nI watched life burn\, dampen\, then grow \n  \nPOEM #2 \nBy: Alex Leondis\, Yitong Zhu\, Mel Tanaka\, Dylan Gombos\, James Paquette\, Monique Lonergan\, San Feldman \nBasking in the sun\, I sit \nAs the park revolves around me \nPedestrians and Passerbys \nWalkers and Wanderers \nAll moving past the same patch of grass and asphalt \nI have seen much change from this spot. \nThe wind blows cooler now. \nAt first it chilled me to the brittle bone. \nNow\, it is almost refreshing. \nA familiar ice can  that aches in a specific way. \nBut now the sun is awake \nStarting to poke out from behind ty \nThe todwering trees and buildings that peer \nIpark. \nAnd I am starting to get warm. \nWarm in my hands. \nWarm in my feet. \nMy toes\, my nose \nAnd my heart. \nA new wind is blowing \nBlowing past me and through me. \nA warm wind\, for the first time in a long time. \nAnd it is welcomed back like an age old friend. \nA new breath. Fresh air. \nSpring is here. \nMake me a gathering place \na safe place \na resting place \nLet the children play \nlet the runners run- let there be a moment to rest and a moment to love. \nLet there be first dates and old friends and new friends and light. \nLet the sun shine\, the breeze blow\, let the geese take flight. \n  \nPOEM # 3 \nBy:  Sam Feldman \nWhat is rebirth? \nWhat does it mean to grow? \nThrough autumn leaves and fallen snow \nThe spring is here and flowers come \nAnd birds add to the quiet hum \n  \nTo change \nTo turn a page \nTo re-arrange \nTo re-estrange \nAnd be regained \nTo stop the flood \nTo a come undone \n  \nUnfinished\, as you are \nAnd be unjudged \n  \nTo delight in the small and good things \nThat come and go on birds wings \nTo honor the land on which we stand and plan for the future \nTo unapologetically and empathetically be. \n  \nRising marks the culmination of Boston Conservatory’s new\, credit-bearing summer course called Beyond Walls: Performance in Public Space\, led by acclaimed artist and entrepreneur Maria Finkelmeier of MF Dynamics\, who garnered praise earlier this year for her inventive multimedia public space project\, Hatched: Breaking Through Silence\, at the Hatch Memorial Shell in Boston. SUMMARY:Conversations with Olmsted: Challenges and Opportunities For Olmsted Parks
DESCRIPTION:Olmsted 200 invites you to join the fourth webinar in our Conversations with Olmsted series. In this series\, we examine different aspects of Olmsted’s far-reaching influence on America’s physical landscape and social fabric\, exploring how best to continue his legacy of parks for all people. \nRegister here to join the conversation. \nParks and public spaces face more challenges and threats than ever before. In some cases\, development has nearly destroyed these historic landscapes\, altering them with highways\, towers\, and more. Unfortunately\, once open spaces are gone\, they’re gone forever. \nIn the age of the pandemic\, our nation’s parks and open green spaces have served as places of healthful recreation and respite – but they are not self-sustaining\, and greater use has meant greater demand for care and attention\, often with far smaller budgets. \nThis panel discussion will be moderated by Stephanie Crockatt\, executive director of the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy\, a member of the NAOP Olmsted Network and will explore the threats and opportunities facing Olmsted parks and what can be done to protect these natural and historic assets for future generations. \nPanelists include: \nKaren Mauney-Brodek\, President of the Emerald Necklace Conservancy. Mauney-Brodek is working to restore and improve the Emerald Necklace’s 1\,100 acres. She spearheaded the Conservancy’s 20th Anniversary celebration in 2018 and is currently leading a significant revitalization of Charlesgate Park with neighborhood group Charlesgate Alliance. \nAndy Mitton\, Member of the Board of Advisors\, Friends of Seattle’s Olmsted Parks. He was part of the Olmsted Legacy Task Force that compiled recommendations for the Superintendent\, Seattle Parks and Recreation and the Seattle Board of Park Commissioners. The task force report is called “Rebirth of Olmsted’s Design for Equity.” Mitton is also a Principal in the landscape architecture firm\, The Berger Partnership. \nRosamond Fletcher\, Excutive Director of Fort Greene Park Conservancy. Fort Greene Park was designed by Olmsted and Calvert Vaux in 1867 and is one of five Olmsted parks in New York City. Fletcher shapes Fort Greene Park Conservancy’s vision and strategic development of its role as steward of the park. She is centering her efforts on engaging the park’s diverse community\, programming the park for a range of users\, and planning long-term improvements to the park’s landscape and historic structures. \n

SUMMARY:Olmsted Now Public Dialogue #1 - Spatial Justice and Public-Making (with DS4SI)
DESCRIPTION:Each third Wednesday of the month\, Olmsted Now invites the community to a public dialogue on shared use\, shared health and shared power in parks and public spaces. These hour-long discussions are a platform to explore our bicentennial themes through the perspective of a guiding community voice. \nThis month’s dialogue is focused on Shared Power. Our guest speakers Lori Lobenstine and Joelle Fontaine will co-lead a conversation on Spatial Justice and Public-Making. Lori is Co-founder and Program Design Lead and Joelle is Art and Creative Placemaking Lead for Design Studio for Social Intervention (aka “DS4SI”). Rooted in Boston’s Upham’s Corner neighborhood\, DS4SI’s multidisciplinary practice brings social justice\, public art\, civic and popular engagement interventions to public space locally\, nationally and internationally. Lori and Joelle will introduce principles that guide DS4SI’s work\, and in particular\, their idea for how a big city-wide park event in Boston could be a model to build “connective capital” across siloed neighborhoods. \nPlease register at the Zoom link below. Login info will automatically be emailed once registered.

SUMMARY:Olmsted Now Public Dialogue #2
DESCRIPTION:Each third Wednesday of the month\, Olmsted Now invites all to a public dialogue on shared use\, shared health and shared power in parks and public spaces. These bicentennial themes are explored through the perspectives of guiding community voices. \nFebruary’s dialogue focuses on Shared Use: “Which activities in parks and public space are welcome—or not?” Urban planner and cultural producer Anita Morson-Matra and President of the Emerald Necklace Conservancy Karen Mauney-Brodek will share insights from their work to offer public programs and navigate permits\, reviews and approvals in Boston and other municipalities. Then Karen’s colleague Jamie Santuccio will introduce the proposed program Parks as Platform—monthly park events for Olmsted Now—and ask for your feedback and suggestions on which activities people would like to see. Whether you propose\, provide or approve public activities\, please join us to broaden this discussion—and shape this season’s program! \nPlease register at THIS ZOOM LINK. Registrants will receive login info via email.

For Olmsted\, “nothing else compares in importance to us with the Boston work…I would have you decline any business that would stand in the way of doing the Best for Boston all the time.” \nThrough events\, education\, and advocacy at the local and national levels\, Olmsted 200 ensures that the legacies of the Olmsteds live on across the country by renewing public and policy commitments to the preservation and maintenance of our historic parks and places. Olmsted Now is the Greater Boston effort\, an inclusive coalition that connects communities and organizations commemorating Greater Boston’s bicentennial of Brookline-based Olmsted with the “fierce urgency of now.” \nRegistration for Olmsteds: Landscapes and Legacies is live HERE. SUMMARY:"Making Space:" Olmsted Now Public Dialogue #4
DESCRIPTION:Each third Wednesday of the month\, Olmsted Now welcomes all to a public online dialogue exploring bicentennial themes: shared use\, shared health and shared power in parks and public spaces. Each session tackles a “big question” about park experience through the guiding perspectives of community voices.  \nJoin us on April 20 from 6-7:30 PM for a public dialogue on Shared Power as we grapple with the question “How can we turn the idea of ‘park equity’ into action?” Educator Stephen Lin of Mass Audubon’s Boston Nature Center & Wildlife Sanctuary in Mattapan will open discussion with former students and local colleagues about how to harness greenspace access to center youth healing in the wake of the pandemic\, especially in environmental justice communities. Joelle Fontaine\, Art & Creative Placemaking Lead at Design Studio for Social Intervention will introduce the equity-centered work of Olmsted Now’s Committee of Neighborhoods with the community leaders who will select and fund park programming by focusing on under-represented creatives\, cultural organizers and organizations to activate underutilized parks and green spaces. \nClick THIS ZOOM LINK to register.

SUMMARY:From Greensward to Putting Greens: Frederick Law Olmsted’s Influence on Golf Course Architecture
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate the US Open coming to Brookline\, join Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site for a discussion on how Olmsted’s principles have influenced golf course design. \nRegister here \nFrederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux’s “Greensward Plan” for Central Park both inspired the American park movement and provided the catalyst for the establishment of landscape architecture as a profession. Golf course design\, whether for public or private use\, combines knowledge of landscape architecture with understanding the unique requirements of a challenging game. \nDuring US Open Week the world’s greatest golfers will compete at The Country Club\, in Brookline\, MA. This year we celebrate the 200th anniversary of Olmsted’s birth. Olmsted himself was a member even before the club decided to build a golf course. Join National Park Service staff from the Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site and four prominent members of the American Society of Golf Course Architects for a lively discussion of how Olmsted’s principles have influenced course design and shaped the profession of golf course architecture.

SUMMARY:Olmsted Now Public Dialogue: WHO Has Public Greenspace Been For?
DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with King Boston’s Embrace Ideas Festival\, Olmsted Now’s coalition co-organizers’ Emerald Necklace Conservancy and Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site present a free dialogue with today’s foremost scholars thinking about Boston’s park system-designer Frederick Law Olmsted at the intersection of greenspace\, abolition and racial justice. Join Stephen Gray and Ethan Carr as they dig into the issues of Carr and Rolf Diamant’s book Olmsted and Yosemite: Civil War\, Abolition\, and the National Park Idea as they relate to the racial equity framework Gray developed for Olmsted Now: Greater Boston’s Olmsted Bicentennial. For Olmsted’s 200th\, we will explore together key questions of who Boston’s and the Nation’s greenspaces have been for and how can we fully understand—and change—these narratives for the next 200 years. \nThe space will open at 10am for informal socializing. This free panel and audience Q&A will be recorded from 10:30-11:30\, with time for attendees to continue dialogue with the speakers before the start of Embrace Ideas at the ICA Boston at noon at 100 Northern Avenue. \nThe recording of the presentation will be shared again for live Q&A from 6-7PM \nRegister for the 10:30AM session below.
