SUMMARY:Dr. Ethan Carr on Boston’s Franklin Park: Olmsted\, Recreation\, and the Modern City
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE \nJoin us on Wednesday\, November 8 at 6:00PM EST with Dr. Ethan Carr for a talk on his new book\, Boston’s Franklin Park: Olmsted\, Recreation\, and the Modern City (LALH 2023)\, which details the history of Franklin Park from the time of peak popularity to the current era of park revival. \nThis talk will be held in person in Rabb Hall at the Central Library in Copley Square. Following the talk\, there will be time for audience Q&A\, and the program will conclude at 7:00 pm with a book signing. \nAbout the book\nDr. Carr’s forthcoming book\, Boston’s Franklin Park: Olmsted\, Recreation\, and the Modern City (LALH 2023)\, documents the design and history of Frederick Law Olmsted’s most mature expression of urban park design. In this comprehensive study\, Carr affirms Franklin Park as one of great works of nineteenth-century American art. Since the 1980s\, historians have described Franklin Park as unfinished\, obsolete\, or a casualty of changing trends in public recreation. Carr disagrees\, offering a persuasive argument that the park’s decline was not a consequence of its design but of a lack of stewardship on the part of the city\, an example of institutionalized racism. \nAbout the author\nEthan Carr\, FASLA\, is professor of landscape architecture at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. An international authority on America’s public landscapes and the author of many books\, he is lead editor of The Papers of Frederick Law Olmsted: The Early Boston Years and coauthor of Olmsted and Yosemite: Civil War\, Abolition\, and the National Park Idea (LALH 2022).

SUMMARY:Save Olmsted Spaces: Franklin Park
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Olmsted Network \nOn March 5\, the Olmsted Network will host a special webinar on the proposed demolition of White Stadium in Boston’s Franklin Park. We’ll be joined by historian and author Ethan Carr (moderator)\, Emerald Necklace Conservancy President Karen Mauney-Brodek and community leaders Louis Elisa and Renee Stacey Welch. \nFranklin Park\, often called “the jewel of the Emerald Necklace\,” is the last great rural park designed by famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. Today\, unfortunately\, 40% or 200 acres of Franklin Park cannot be accessed freely by the general public— and the threat of commercialization continues to grow! \nLEARN MORE AND REGISTER

SUMMARY:Conversations with Olmsted: What Ever Happened to Parks for All People?
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Olmsted Network \nParks for all people was one of Frederick Law Olmsted’s guiding principles. Nearly 200 years before the environmental justice movement\, he designed parks as democratic spaces. Today\, in too many places\, these public spaces are under attack\, viewed as building sites where access can be limited to those with money and power. This free webinar will examine distressing trends across the country and examine what can be done to ensure parkland is viewed as an essential public amenity. \nThis panel discussion will be moderated by writer Bonnie Jean Feldkamp (Louisville\, KY) and feature Derrick Evans (Boston\, MA)\, Bronwyn Nichols Lodato (Chicago\, IL) and Wyman Winston (Milwaukee\, WI). \nLEARN MORE AND REGISTER
