SUMMARY:Second Saturdays Volunteer Event: Ecological Restoration Work in the Back Bay Fens
DESCRIPTION:Join Emerald Necklace Conservancy staff and volunteers with land stewardship and invasive species removal work in the Emerald Necklace parks on Saturday\, July 10th! We will be removing brush\, debris\, and invasive species from the Mother’s Rest section of the Back Bay Fens. \nThere is a 25-person capacity limit for this event and registration is required in order to participate. Those who register will automatically receive an email from Joelle Boyle\, the Land Stewardship Coordinator\, with further details\, including the necessary waivers to sign and specific information on where to meet and what to expect on the day of the event. \nPlease email volunteer@emeraldnecklace.org with inquiries on this event or other volunteer opportunities. \n  \nCOVID-19 policy: The Conservancy has been closely monitoring health and safety guidelines set by the City of Boston\, the Town of Brookline\, and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts since the beginning of the pandemic. All programs and events that we have follow our Conservancy COVID-19 policies. \nAt this time\, we still require that all volunteers wear a face covering and practice social distancing during volunteer events. We advise that volunteers who feel ill within 72 hours of the event do not participate. All volunteers will be required to sign a COVID-19 volunteer waiver\, along with our standard volunteer waiver\, in order to participate. \n\n

Tonight\, Summer on the Emerald Necklace is pleased to present the following shows: \nAll performances start at 6:00 PM  \n\n\nCharlesgate Park – corner of Beacon St. and Charlesgate East  \nJP Saxophone Quartet\, Jazz\, Latin\, and Classical favorites for four saxophone. \n\nOlmsted Park – Allerton Overlook  \nFair Play\, Traditional fiddle tunes of Ireland\, Shetland\, Scandinavia\, and Appalachia. \n\nJamaica Pond – Boathouse Bandstand  \nTareq Rantisi\, Middle Eastern and Global Jazz Music. \n\n\nAll concerts are weather-dependent and will be canceled in the event of severe weather. Please check back here for updates or call us at 617-522-2700. \nJP Saxophone Quartet \nDescribed as “vibrant\, versatile\, and engaging\,” the Jamaica Plain Saxophone Quartet brings energy and variety to every performance. JPSQ’s repertoire list covers the spectrum\, with music appropriate for everything from weddings to birthdays to cocktail parties and more. And with almost a century of playing experience between the four members of the group\, JPSQ brings an impeccable level of poise and professionalism to every engagement. For more information\, visit www.jpsaxquartet.com/gig-press-kit. \nFair Play \nVeteran performers Maggie Holtzberg (fiddle) and Mitch Nelin (mandocello) play a spirited repertoire of driving Irish reels and jigs\, Shetland and Scandinavian listening tunes\, Southern old-time marches\, and waltzes. The musical range and ringing strings of the long neck mandocello is an ideal accompaniment to the fiddle. \nTareq Rantisi  \nTareq is a world percussionist\, composer\, and educator. Initially self-taught in the Arabic music tradition\, he received a B.A. in Performance from Berklee College of Music in 2011 and a Master’s from the Berklee Global Jazz Institute in 2019. His studies and practice have brought him into deep dialogue with Jazz\, Afro-Cuban\, Indian\, West African.  \nNaseem Alatrash is a Palestinian cellist\, composer. Naseem’s performances include a mix of improvisation and traditional melodies\, with a focus on traditional Arabic music\, with influences from jazz and contemporary style. Naseem studied at The Edward Said National Conservatory of Music in Palestine\, holds a Bachelor of Music and Master of Music in Cello Performance and a post master’s fellowship from the Berklee College of Music.

DESCRIPTION:Presented in partnership with Yang’s Martial Arts Association of Boston. \nClass Location: Olmsted Park \nInstructor: Joe Best \nJoe Best started his martial arts training in Uechi Ryu Karate Do in 1970 under George Mattson and earned his black belt in 1977. \nHis Tai Chi practice began in 1980 at the Chinese Wushu Research Institute with Master Bow Sim Mark where he was also introduced to Hsing Yi and Bagua. \nIn 1985 Joe joined the Tai Chi program at Yang’s Martial Arts Association and began teaching in 1988. Joe has always had a strong interest in the technical aspects of the arts in general and of the internal aspects in particular. He is also a licensed massage therapist. \n— \nTai Chi (Taijiquan) is a sequence of postures connected by flowing movement\, practiced with focused breathing and a calm mind – a type of moving meditation. The slow\, smooth movements gently stimulate the internal organs and joints\, and improve energy circulation. Tai Chi is a gentle\, low-impact exercise suitable for adults of any age and varying physical ability. Practicing Tai Chi can reduce stress\, increase energy\, balance\, and flexibility\, and ease symptoms of many health problems such as high blood pressure\, asthma\, back pain\, and arthritis. \nLocated in the heart of Roslindale Village\, Yang’s Martial Arts Association (YMAA) of Boston offers Tai Chi\, Kung Fu\, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu\, Kettlebell and Kids Kung Fu classes. YMAA Boston classes share a deep knowledge of the arts in a warm and friendly atmosphere. He has dedicated his life to music education and showcasing the steelpan. https://www.panneubeansteel.com/ \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nTim Hall \nTim Hall is an award-winning  musician and performance poet from Detroit\, MI\, while honoring Boston as home. His poetry draws inspiration from his lived experiences – charting the nuances of blackness\, masculinity and the beauties of life. Tim’s music is used to underscore his vivid storytelling with warm neo soul\, jazz and hip hop influences. He is an Assistant Professor in the Professional Music Department of Berklee College of Music\, the co-owner of HipStory – a digital media production company dedicated to creating and showcasing the work of marginalized identities within media – and Artist Relations manager for BAMSFest. Additionally\, Tim is a member of the band STL GLD\, and a principal collaborator with Cliff Notez\, Oompa and Will Dailey. He was honored as “Session Musician of the Year” by the 2020 Boston Music Awards\, and recognized by WBUR’s Artery 25 as 1 of 25 millennials of color impacting Arts and Culture in Boston.
