In October, at the beginning of the Leadership Program we worked at Olmstead Park removing invasive species like Asiatic Bittersweet and Japanese Knotweed and even Buckthorn. We also worked at some stairs near the Sugar Bowl where we swept the stairs and gave the stairs brand new swales for water runoff and left them looking brand new. We worked at the Victory Gardens and Kelleher Rose Garden a couple of times. We cleaned the SLUG Plot in the Victory Garden, planted some Daffodil bulbs, weeded the weeds and pruned roses at the rose garden.
During the winter, we were working in the Emerald Necklace Conservancy office. Most of the time we were at the office because of the bad weather, it was too cold for us to work outside and there wasn’t much to do in the winter. When we were in the office we basically talked about things we were going to be doing during the spring and summer, and we also learned how to become leaders for the Summer Youth Green Team. We had to do role-plays where we had to act like we were crew leaders and demonstrate what we would do if one of the team members acted out or was always late for work or barely showed up. It was an interesting activity. We also had to write a two page speech where we had to compare two things and say why we think one thing is better then the other. We had to do this because it would help us come out of our shells, learn how to speak clearly, explain things better, and to become a better leader.
Hopefully our experience in this program and our hard work will help us in the future to become better landscapers and leaders.
