Frederick Law Olmsted's Birthday Quiz Answers

1) Answer is B. Olmsted was born in Hartford, CT on April 26, 1822.

2) Answer is D. Olmsted “tried on” many careers before finding his calling as landscape architect, although jeweler was not one of them.

3) Answer is C. We’re happy, (for obvious reasons) to report that the reference, “Jeweled Girdle” fell out of favor in the early part of the last century.

4) Answer is B. Olmsted called his home and studio at 99 Warren Street, Brookline, “Fairsted.” Today it is the National Park Service’s Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site. Although the home and offices are temporarily closed for restoration, (slated to reopen in 2010) you can visit the lovely 2-acre grounds.

5) Answer is C. Olmsted and an early partner, Calvert Vaux, (with whom he designed Central Park), were the first to use the term “landscape architecture” to define their work.
