Speak Out Lecture by John Francis, PhD
“Walking the Earth: Steps Toward Sustainability”
After witnessing the devastation from an oil spill in the San Francisco Bay in 1971, John Francis was compelled to give up motorized transportation and began walking. He walked across the country and took a vow of silence along the way. As he recounts in his memoir, Planetwalker, 22 Years of Walking, 17 Years of Silence, his journey brought him closer to the rhythms of the earth. He founded Planetwalk, a non-profit environmental awareness organization and earned college and graduate degrees and a PhD in land resources. In 2010 he was named the first Education Fellow at the National Geographic Society. Today, Dr. Francis is a visiting associate professor at the Gaylord Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
