Crew 3 - Returners: Week 4

Monday, July 26th - Today we worked in the southwest corridor. The corridor runs parallel to the Orange Line tracks from Forest Hills to Back Bay. The SWC serves as a bike path, walking path and a dog park. Furthermore it is spotted with playgrounds, public fountains and designated athletic areas (i.e. hockey arenas, basketball and tennis courts). In addition there are public fountains, fields, a plethora of seating areas and even a rose garden.

My crew worked near the Mass. Ave. T stop. We mainly did pruning and the rest of my group did routine trail maintenance and weed removal. I met a pleasant man named Franco who is the head volunteer for the Southwest Corridor. Overall it was a passable workday that allowed me the chance to work in a nice area I had never been.

Tuesday, July 27th - Today we worked in the Victory Gardens. We was weeding, picking up trash, and pruning flowers by cutting the dead flowers. Some of the crew filled in the potholes in the paths through the gardens. It was really hot that day and I could hardly work. The day went by kind of quick. It was a lot of weeding that day, that’s what we mainly did. The tools we used were the claw cultivator and pruners.

Wednesday, July 28th – Everyday, we gather up and talk about what is to be done that day. We then gather up the tools and pick which tools we want to use. Today, we worked at Mother’s Rest. We watered the plants all over the hillside including the top where the sidewalks are. The Witchhazels are hurting a little so we took care of them. All we do is hold a little hole on the tree gators and add water so the water can slowly drip out. Also, we weeded around the playground and around the trees. The smaller trees needed to be weeded around so that we could mulch them. The hillside got weeded also so that no weeds were sticking out of the mulch. At the top of the hillside, next to the sidewalk, we also weeded and mulched. Using the wheelbarrow to transport the mulch made the work much easier.

Thursday, July 29th – Today, we went to the Mall at Chestnut Hill and went climbing. We met a friend of Kate’s named Rob. He was funny and knew about climbing rocks. He and Kate helped us a lot in climbing the rocks and gave us ways to face our fears. They also gave us strategies to climb that made things easy. They made sure everything on our bodies was strapped, good, and ready to go when we climb. Some of us raced up the wall to see who got to the top the first. One of us did the climb blindfolded. They also had a climb that was easier to help us warm up. That day made our arms worked out and pumped. We also had to touch an anchor on top of the rock before going down. Our belayers made us feel safer on the way down. They lowered us and had us take our time while we walked backwards down the rock.
