Crew 3 - Returners: Week 3

Sunday, July 18th - On Sunday we had a special event at the Sugar Bowl. We had a movie night; the movie that was playing was Fantastic Mr. Fox, and it was a good movie. Before the movie, started we advertised the event by putting up posters and selling food to people. We were trying to entice people into joining this rare event. We had a good time playing with the kids and enjoying the nice day. But we were still working as some were selling popcorn and others were giving the parents fliers about the park and the infamous Asian Longhorned Beetle. Other people were selling things like glow sticks and masks for the children. The event was very enjoyable and it felt good knowing that we gave the kids something to do on a nice day. I look forward to any other movie projects we may have in the future.

Monday, July 19th - Today we worked in the Southwest Corridor. The group split up, some of us went to Forest Hills and the rest stayed at the rose garden over by Mass Ave. I worked at the Forest Hills T station. We pulled weeds and raked leaves. We also cut down Japanese knotweed that was surrounding somebody’s fence. After that we cleaned up the Tot Lot by removing vines from the fence, weeding the playground and picking up all the trash. The other group weeded by Mass Ave and deadheaded roses.

Tuesday - off

Wednesday, July 21st - On Wednesday we were working at the Rose Garden in the Back Bay Fens. Everyone learned how to deadhead roses. We also pulled weeds and picked up dead rose petals in the rose beds. Outside the garden, we raked up leaves, weeded under the hedge and picked up trash to make it look nice.

Thursday, July 22nd - On Thursday, we went to a workshop to talk about the Asian Longhorned beetle. We watched a slideshow presentation on what the beetle look likes, where to find it, where it migrates and how to find it. We learned that the Asian Longhorned beetle is an invasive species from China and is killing our trees young and old, healthy or sick. You can find a beetle by looking for a hole the size of a quarter in a tree. The Asian Longhorned beetle is very pretty for something so dangerous to trees. It is black with white spots and blue antennas. Me and my fellow crew members where really into the slide show and learning about the beetle. It was a cool slide show and I plan on using what I learned from the slideshow and my own personal knowledge about the insect.
