Crew 2 - Olmsted Park/Jamaica Pond - Week 1

Tuesday, July 6th - In week 1 as a leader of crew 2, the first day was all about introduction so me and my co-leader got to meet our team for the first time. It was really exciting. So we introduced ourselves to everybody as their leaders and then got to play some ice breaker games. We played some name games and some fun games like Whah to really break everybody out of their shells. We then talked about invasive species to get them to know about what we were going to be working on all summer. After we went into Olmsted Park to look for some of the invasives we had lunch. When we came back from lunch I had to do tools introduction to give everybody a feel of the different tools we were going to be using. Kate then decided to let us go a bit early for the first day since it was an extremely hot day.

Wednesday, July 7th - On day two, we met up at Daisy field for our first day of work. It was also my first day of leading the crew on doing a job. We were going to be doing invasive removal at Olmsted Park. We were mainly removing bittersweet and we found lots of it. So we removed bittersweet for some hours, and then took a lunch break. Dylan then gave us a lesson on Black Swallow Wart. We looked for some Black Swallows Wart for about a half an hour, but didn’t really find much. After that we went back to finding and pulling on some bittersweet. Next thing you know the day was over and we got to go home.

Thursday, July 8th - On day three of week 1, we got to help Franklin Park Coalitions team with Sports Night event at Franklin Park. First, Kate had us handing out fliers to pedestrians from our office here in Jamaica Plain all the way to Franklin Park where the event was taking place. When we were done handing out slips we got to be part of the event. We basically just played basketball and other sports with everybody that was there. We also ate hot dogs and cheeseburgers.

Friday, July 9th - On day 4, our last day of work in the week, we had a Banking workshop. We had a lady from citizen’s bank come in and talk to us about bank accounts, and saving money so we know how to handle and spend our money wisely. After the workshop we had pizza for lunch and then Kate had us go into the Arnold arboretum and do a scavengers hunt for certain trees and shrubs. After a couple of hours of searching all thru the arboretum for specific things on the list Kate had given us the day was over and it was time to go home for the weekend.
