Crew 1 - Back Bay Fens/Riverway: Week 3

Tuesday, July 20th - Today, we met up at the MFA. We cleaned up the shrub beds and mulched them afterwards. We weeded ever so carefully and treated the plants that belonged as our babies. We found a variety of trash, including several vodka bottles. There were a lot of oak tree leaves that we had to rake and somehow stuff into limited organic matter bags. We also edged the beds and swept the mulch with the push brooms. It was all very exciting! On this day, we also had a positive new addition to the green team crew number one! Her name is Lisa.

Wednesday, July 21st - On Wednesday we met at the Longwood Medical station, and walked the long voyage to the Riverway Park. We harassed Jackson to use his bike; it was a fine bike. It wasn’t so sunny that day but we sweated a lot. There were more weeds to pull than there were the Daylily plants. Abe ran away from a small mouse and stayed alert for the rest of work. There was also a random shopping cart full of empty bottles and cans. At first the shrub beds were very overgrown, but when we finished, only the Daylilies and shrubs remained. Though the Daylilies were sort of trampled and looked a little sad afterwards. We wish the Daylilies the best of luck. Maybe they'll look better when the crew goes back next week.

Thursday, July 22nd - Today we went to a presentation about the Asian Longhorned Beetle. It was very informative and we learned a lot of useful facts about these tree killing bugs. We are now on the lookout to arrest and turn in these killers - one beetle at a time. We were supposed to go sailing afterwards but it was too windy to go. It has been rescheduled for next week! After the presentation, some of the crazy girls decided to roll down the “hill”. We look forward to spending more time working and bonding with crew number one! Who’s number one? WE’RE NUMBER ONE!
