Crew 1 - Back Bay Fens/Riverway: Week 1

Tuesday July 6th - This was our first day of work with the Emerald Necklace Conservancy. Everyone who was participating in the program, students and leaders, met up in Olmsted Park for the introductory day. Once we were there, we all assembled together into one big circle and played an Ice Breaker game. In the game, we went around to different people and greeted each other in different kinds of handshakes, which were mostly funky and pretty much never used in normal settings. But really, what the game did was introduce us to the people in the Green Team. I got lucky and had myself introduced myself to the people I was going to work with side by side pretty early. I thought it was a very good start.

Afterwards, we split up into our teams. There are three crews in total. There was the BYF crew, us, the Brookline/ABCD crew and the Returners crew. We were introduced to our team leaders, Lindsey and Jackson, and the rest of our crew. Our team leaders decided to kick things off by introducing us to some of the Green Team games, the most notable one being Wah.

It didn't take long for any of us to discover that we were a quiet bunch.

I can't remember the other games as well as I remember Wah. Lindsey and Jackson must've really loved it, since it quickly became the game that all of us played. We also played Whoosh, which wasn't as good because it could only be fun if we were all on serious sugar.

We were also introduced to our tools, which I remember them being a rake, another rake, a different rake, a hoe, a bunch of shovels, and pliers. That was, until Jackson corrected me and told us the right names for everything. Wasn't my brightest moment.

At the end of the day, we played more games, like freeze tag. We also played football with some peeople from the other groups, but I mostly sat around trying to bond with the fellow females in the group, not really feeling up to playing football.

And overall... I thought it was an awesome first day. I felt good really good about it. :)

Wednesday, July 7th - During my first week working for the Emerald Necklace Conservancy I learned a lot of new things. On Wednesday the 7th our team weeded and did maintenance around the Victory Gardens and in the S.L.U.G. plot. It was this day that I learned what the Victory Gardens were. We learned all about the significance of the gardens during WWII and its role today.

Friday, July 9th - Today we had an informational workshop on banking where Cassandre from Citizen’s Bank came in and talked with us all about money management. It was here I learned the importance of saving your money and having a checking account, now I know what I really need money for and how I can cut down on useless spending.
